LATEST MESSAGE FROM CLIFF May '08. "An eight-hour flight from Barbados, a few hours in England, and then another flight – 12 hours 15 minutes! – to Beijing. A huge 12-hour time difference – and that’s how ‘The Great Walk to Beijing’ started for me! Olivia had already been walking for 18 days; she looked tired – not because of the walk, but because she had a bad cough and cold, and her voice was almost gone. However, she obviously wasn’t going to give in! She and a small group did the whole 23-day Walk, and were joined along the way by those of us who couldn’t do the whole trip. I and about 20 others joined her for the last five days, and were driven in a bus to meet up with her. Within an hour of setting out, our bus was hit by a truck swerving into our lane; our driver caught up with the truck, pulled in front of it, stopped, got out, thumped the other driver, got back in, and off we went. ‘We’re all going on a summer holiday’, someone sang out! Four hours later we arrived at our destination. Hugs all round, then Olivia said she was glad I’d arrived as I could help her lead the singing. Every day before we started walking, we sang a piece of ‘Magic’ (one of Olivia’s hits) and a new and inspiring song called ‘Don’t Give Up’. It did the trick: there’s something about singing while on a ‘mission’ that encourages bonding. I often found myself walking with people I didn’t know, but within half an hour or so, we’d shared life stories. I felt great, and the jetlag took a back seat. We walked each day for five or six hours and were then driven in a couple of buses to a hotel near the next piece of walkable Wall. I say ‘walkable’ because a lot of the Great Wall has pretty much disappeared. Olivia said that, in the Gobi Desert section, they walked for a couple of days where the Wall used to be. Because of its condition, the Walk organisers had chosen the sections which were most interesting and most scenic, so after each day’s walk there would be a five-hour drive in the buses. The hotel in Beijing was terrific but you have to remember that, once we were walking, we were very much ‘out in the sticks’ and the hotels left a lot to be desired! However, we all made it to the finishing post feeling good about raising money for Olivia’s Cancer Unit and the Hospital Research Centre. The Hospital is connected with the Ludwig Institute, which has 12 research centres worldwide; all their findings are shared, so cancer sufferers everywhere will benefit. Thanks, Olivia, for inviting me to be part of such a great adventure – and huge thanks to all who sponsored me – it was a massive encouragement to me to know of such generous support. Don’t forget to check out www.greatwalktobeijing.com if you haven’t sponsored; the Fund hasn’t reached its target yet and it’s never too late to give. After a few days relaxing in China, I flew to Germany to perform in their ‘Ultimate Chart Show’. It turns out that I’m the third most popular recording artist in Germany (behind two German singers) so I guess that means I’m the No 1 foreign recording artist – fantastic!! On to Paris to meet with booksellers; my new autobiography is published in September, so the booksellers’ representatives were wined and dined by the publishers, Headline. The evening was relaxed and fun. Now all I have to do is finish checking the manuscript! Then it was back to the UK for the media launch of the ‘50 Favourite Bible Stories’ book, and for my niece’s wedding. That was a great day, sunny and hot, and very romantic, with lots of love and tears of joy. I’m writing this in the South of France, where I’m staying with some friends. They invited me to stay, attend the Monaco Grand Prix, and catch a movie at the Cannes Film Festival. The film, which was directed by Clint Eastwood, was called ‘The Changeling’ and starred Angelina Jolie; I loved it. The Grand Prix will be exciting; I saw it for the first time two years ago and can’t wait to experience it again, especially as Lewis Hamilton is racing. That’s all for now. I’m looking forward to Wimbledon and Portugal – where I’ll have to get down to learning the songs for the ‘Time Machine’ tour. Love ya!" (cliffrichard.org)
